L’AMOUR FOU

The public life of Yves Saint Laurent was as extravagant as it was decadent. As a design prodigy and then the grand coutourier of a fashion empire, he influenced fifty years of style, but few are familiar with the private life of the legend.
In L’
AMOUR

FOU
, Pierre Bergé, the man with whom Saint Laurent shared four decades of his life and love, reflects on the equally extravagant history of their personal relationship. Framed around the 2009 auction of the elaborate and priceless art collection amassed by Yves and Pierre personally over several decades, this extraordinary documentary provides an unprecedented look at the life of a mythic personality, whose personal life matched his public side for elegance, extravagance and passion.

Start Spreading the News

Headshot_bridge

With apologies to old blue eyes, I’m spreading the news. Big news. Readers of this blog know that for the past six years of The Urban Core I’ve covered a lot of territory. Both in the blog sense and personally. I’ve had lots of projects, assignments, and causes. One thing that I hope stands out is that I stood up and worked on things that matter, especially our perception challenged urban core neighborhoods. And when I got lucky, I actually changed a couple things for the better.

One of the greatest things about Jacksonville is that you can be a big fish in a small pond, even though there are a million of us Duvalians. Here, you can help a miracle happen and shake up the entire system. You can create and manage things that move markets and make significant economic and social change for the good. But Jacksonville isn’t the beginning nor the end of the world, is it?

I have always wanted to use my ability to tell stories and advocate for big projects and causes. That is why I am so happy to announce to my blog readers that I am joining the team at Keymer Group, a public relations agency based right here in Jacksonville. Keymer is a bit different than most Jacksonville agencies. For one they have few Jacksonville clients, though I aim to change that.

Keymer has a national reputation because the team has been busy building national reputations. Our client list is impressive. Thusly much of the work I’ve been doing involves major corporations, huge issues, and major events. I’ve already brainstormed America’s reaction to a constitutional monarch in an Arab Spring country, written to several major newspapers, and chatted it up with a half dozen Wall Street Journal reporters. I’ve seen two of our current issues make national news and one is about to really take off. I am getting a lot of these assignments professionally. Keymer does public relations properly. Its effects based. The goal is a business goal not getting coverage. It did not take me long to see why the methodology of effects based public relations works. And why, because of our wins, our clients are our biggest advocates.

As you can probably tell I am enjoying this. A lot. I look forward to working with my colleagues to move Jacksonville’s interests and our dynamic community forward. To make big national headlines that reflect the amazing things that are happening here. And to stay on top of things that matter to our world. I will still be blogging, of course, and still busting my hump for worthy causes.

Like they say on the Onion News Network, you will be exposed to high levels of news.

Cheers, and thanks for your support.

Tony

PS- Thought I’d take us out with a jam. I mean hey, its still the urban core right?

Music Club at the Library! KICKS OFF WITH VON BARLOW!

von flier.pdf Download this file

The Quick Version - June 14th – this Tuesday coming up. Von Barlow’s Jazz Journey.   At the Main Library. For kids ages 6-14. He’s in the Jacksonville Jazz Festival Hall of Fame, and an amazing entertainer.  Here’s a link to advertise online as well. http://jplmainchildrens.blogspot.com/2011/05/music-club-with-von-barlows-jazz.html

The long version;

I’m starting a library program in June simply called Music Club.  It will be held every other Tuesday at 4pm and geared towards children 8-12, although any child 6-14 may attend.  We’ll explore different types of music, and learn about particular artists / composers, instruments and theory. I’m already getting some amazing musicians and performers for the classes. They’ll be talking about their personal history as a musician,  how the instument works, what sort of places they play and record, going into depth about the instrument they play, is it the main source of income for them.. etc. The class is an hour long, and while they certainly don’t have to take up that entire timeslot, they are being given free rein to do so. And if the musicians want - at the end of class we can break the kids up into groups and have them go to instrument stations – getting to hold and play some of the instruments.

Attched is a flyer for our first program.  Our Music Club kicks off June 14th at 4pm with Von Barlow’s Jazz Journey! He’s played with Ray Charles, Etta James, Harry Connick Jr  and Bunky Green  (…just to name a few) and he’ll be coming to play with his band and talk with kids at the Main Library .

Thanks!

Josh Jubinsky

PS. For our second installment (June 28th) we’ll be having Tony Steve, a Jacksonville University professor of world and contemporary music, with a specialization in percussion. He’ll be sharing with us how percussion instruments can be used for soundtracks for silent films.  We’re talking insane audio / visual presentation marimbas, all sorts of drums and maybe a gamelan.

PRESS REVIEWS

“…one of the most effective and expressive environmental films of recent years.” - Variety “On the want-to-see- scale, GASLAND tops the list” - Washington Post

“Riveting” - LA Weekly “GASLAND just might be the best film of the year.” - The Huffington Post

“Over the past 8 days I was lucky enough to view 40 films…The most important film I saw was the documentary GASLAND…This examination of air quality and more specifically drinking water under attack from NYC to Ft. Worth was very eye opening.”
- USA TODAY GASLAND is “well done. It holds people’s attention. And it could block our industry.” - Oil and Gas Journal President of the Natural Gas Supply Association

“VOLCANIC…With humor and inquisitiveness, Fox has delivered 2010’s most alarming wake-up call.”
- Hammer To Nail “When something emerges like Josh Fox’s GASLAND, a work of art which also happens to educate quite effectively…this is why festivals, even the big ones, are capable of surprises, because wonderful things do seep through the cracks. Precisely because it was purely personal…and that it was as concerned with aesthetic matters as issues, GASLAND may also be some ideal of that cherished sub-genre in many festival circles, the environmental film, which tends to leave art behind for the topic it’s addressing.” - Cinemascope

DETAILS

GasLand, the 3rd film in the Green Carpet Series comes to the 5 Points Theater Monday, June 6th!

When: Doors open at 5:30, Film starts at 6:30

Cost: $10

Stick around following the film, there will be a short Q and A session about “fracking” with a local Hydro-Geologist.

About the Fracking Film:

“The largest domestic natural gas drilling boom in history has swept across the United States. The Halliburton-developed drilling technology of “fracking” or hydraulic fracturing has unlocked a “Saudia Arabia of natural gas” just beneath us. But is fracking safe?

When filmmaker Josh Fox is asked to lease his land for drilling, he embarks on a cross-country odyssey uncovering a trail of secrets, lies and contamination. A recently drilled nearby Pennsylvania town reports that residents are able to light their drinking water on fire. This is just one of the many absurd and astonishing revelations of a new country called GASLAND. Part verite travelogue, part expose, part mystery, part bluegrass banjo meltdown, part showdown.”

is proud to bring “GasLand” to 5 Points Theater
as the third film in its 2011 Green Carpet Film Series.
The goal of the film series is to foster dialogue, awareness, and action on sustainability issues facing North Florida.GasLand is a documentary movie about the effects of hydraulic fracturing or fracking, which is a means of naturalgas extraction employed in deep natural gas well drilling. Once a well is drilled, millions of gallons of water, sand andproprietary chemicals are injected, under high pressure, into a well. The pressure fractures the shale and props openfissures that enable natural gas to flow more freely out of the well. The largest domestic natural gas drilling boom in history has swept across the United States. The Halliburton-developed drilling technology of “fracking” or hydraulic fracturing has unlocked a “Saudia Arabia of natural gas” just beneath us. But is fracking safe?

The year is 1845, the earliest days of the Oregon Trail, and a wagon team of three families has hired the mountain man Stephen Meek to guide them over the Cascade Mountains. Claiming to know a short cut, Meek leads the group on an unmarked path across the high plain desert, only to become lost in the dry rock and sage.
Over the coming days, the emigrants must face the scourges of hunger, thirst and their own lack of faith in each other’s instincts for survival. When a Native American wanderer crosses their path, the emigrants are torn between their trust in a guide who has proven himself unreliable and a man who has always been seen as the natural enemy.

CoWork Jax and Perdue, Inc. Announce New Partnership

Media Contact:

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

CoWork Jax and Perdue, Inc. Announce New Partnership

JACKSONVILLE, FL , May 26, 2011 – CoWork Jax, a locally owned company bringing  coworking space to Downtown Jacksonville, today announced a significant  partnership with office furniture supplier Perdue, Inc.

Under terms of the partnership, Perdue will furnish the coworking office space with the latest furniture and accessories from Steelcase and Turnstone, which offer lines developed specifically for coworking and collaboration.

The coworking concept offers space for entrepreneurs, freelancers and small companies to work in a professional, creative environment and meet others like themselves.  Most coworking spaces offer desks that can be rented for the day or for an extended period of time, small office spaces and common areas for people to hold impromptu meetings or brainstorms.  Coworking spaces also offer areas like conference rooms and white boards, tools that are often out of reach for freelancers or other small companies.

In February and March of this year, CoWork Jax held a demonstration coworking event in the AT&T Tower 301 in Downtown Jacksonville to demonstrate the need for such a space in the Jacksonville market.  The event was a success, opening the door for CoWork Jax to seek a permanent home in Downtown.

“Downtown Jacksonville is where we want to be.  We think it’s on the cusp of something great, and we see CoWork Jax as a part of that new movement,” said Elton Rivas, founder of Zero Confines, the parent company for CoWork Jax.  “The partnership with Perdue, a Jacksonville-based business and longtime Downtown supporter, will provide us with some of the best amenities for our coworkers.  We couldn’t be happier.”

Perdue has been a Jacksonville mainstay since its beginning in 1916.  In 2009, they relocated back to Downtown after several decades on the Southside as they wanted to be a part of and show their support for the urban neighborhood.

“We are really excited about what CoWork Jax is doing,” said Vince McCormack, CEO of Perdue.  “An organization like this will bring more entrepreneurs, new businesses and innovative thinkers to the urban core.”

CoWork Jax plans to announce its permanent home in the upcoming weeks.  To keep up with the latest developments, visit Coworkjax.com and follow us on Twitter (@CoWorkJax).

Today is a SUPER day

Did you know today is a SUPER day?

Something Unexplainable Powerful Extraordinary and Revolutionary is about to happen.

Have you ever sat in a room full of people listening to a lecture or presentation, and the speaker asked you to raise your hand if you agreed on the idea that was presented, but you hesitated until others raised their hand as well?

This week, WE have the chance.  Wait..scratch that. Chance is something you bet on.

WE have the opportunity to deliver a result so monumental, it can’t help but change the way we view opportunities around us.

But the first thing you have to do is raise your hand.

This week, WE can make the choice to shave a little extra time off our lunch break, afternoon commute, or weekend activity to enter into a place with our hands raised.

A raised hand demonstrates you agree with an idea. A raised hand challenges you to act upon your heart’s urging. A raised hand makes a difference in our community.

A raised hand is a vote.

Step up Unlock the Potential that Exists Right now

Will you make the time to vote today?
